Interesting, except High Sierra won't install unless you're running Mountain Lion, according to the system reqs. And I know that Mountain Lion isn't available from a secure download site. So, that leaves my digitally-challenged friend stuck with Snow Leopard, correct? He has to stay with 10.6.8 unless he buys a newer iMac. Seems like a pretty nasty solution to what should be a routine fix.
No, he doesn't need a new computer just yet. ? He can upgrade from Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion or later. Have him sign into the App Store with his Apple ID. Locate the High Sierra installer link and attempt a download. The Store should prevent that but allow him to download the El Capitan installer. He can upgrade to El Capitan then to High Sierra. No need for Mountain Lion.

I had this same problem and was unable to delete the /Users//Library/Application Support/iCloud/Accounts folder, as I had already erased the hard drive. I could have restored from a Time Machine backup but didn't fancy waiting all that time to restore and erase again!

We are off to the races now! The first thing you will notice is that instead of downloading macOS Mojave Installer inside the App Store it opens Software Update.
